Coach Flatt's Baseball Background

  • Early Playing Career: Started baseball at 3 years old, excelling as a shortstop before becoming a standout pitcher in travel ball.

  • High School: Key player for McKinney North’s 2006 Texas 4A state semi-finalist team, recording a rare hit off future MLB star Clayton Kershaw.

  • College & Independent Ball: Was pursuing a walk-on opportunity at San Diego State before an elbow injury shifted his focus. Played two more years in an independent league.

  • MLB Experience: Worked with four Major League teams - Washington Nationals, New York Mets, Cincinnati Reds, and Tampa Bay Rays -in a variety of ballpark and baseball operations roles. He worked closely with MLB talents like Joey Votto and Collin McHugh, as well as HOF manager Dusty Baker.

  • Coaching: Head coach in the 16U Glendale Babe Ruth League for the past three fall seasons.

Our Approach

  • Skill Development

    We focus on developing well-rounded athletes by expanding their skill sets, from mastering multiple positions to fine-tuning pitching repertoires

  • Video Analysis

    We use video analysis to break down every aspect of a player's game, allowing for targeted improvements and faster skill development. I learned this technique during my time interning in MLB and now I apply it to youth players

  • Mindset Training

    We take a holistic approach, building a strong mindset and leadership qualities that drive success on and off the diamond. We also challenge players to reflect on their mindset in key game situations, helping them develop the mental resilience to perform under pressure.

New Player Form

Coach Flatt and Coach Ortiz are assembling a competitive 14U Fall Team for the 2025 season. If you're interested in learning more about our program, please complete the new player form and we'll be in touch with next steps.

We're using this season as a trial run before potentially launching Flatt Baseball Academy in 2026 as a registered business. For now, players will register and pay through Glendale Babe Ruth, but all recruiting, rosters and team info will be centralized here at Flatt Baseball Academy.

⚾Team Information

  • Name: FBA Sluggers

  • Coaching Staff: Coach Flatt, Coach Ortiz

  • Age Group: 14U, age as of 4/30/25

  • Location: Northeast LA (Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Glendale, Burbank, Pasadena, La Crescenta and La Canada areas)

  • Season: August/September - November/December

  • Practices: We will get in at least 3-4 practices prior to league games

  • League Games: Team will participate in the Fall ‘25 Glendale Babe Ruth League (~12 games, age range skews 12-14)

  • Program Highlights:

    • Development-focused training with emphasis on individual skills

    • Exposure to league play and (eventually) competitive tournaments

    • Opportunities for players to better understand mechanics through video and improve mental resilience

    • Experienced coaching that develops players for success at the high school level and beyond

  • Player Expectations:

    • Commitment to any team practices games and eventually tournaments

    • Strong work ethic, positive attitude and good sportsmanship

    • Willingness to learn and grow in a fun, but competitive environment
